How to File a Hail Damage Insurance Claim in Texas — Step by Step

Texas homeowners file more hail damage insurance claims than almost any other state in the country. North Texas in particular — including the entire DFW metro — averages 6–8 significant hail events per year. If you own a home here long enough, you will file this claim. Here's exactly how to do it right.

Before You Do Anything: Know Your Texas Policy Rights

  • Your rates cannot be raised for a hail claim. In Texas, hail is classified as an act of God. Filing a legitimate claim cannot cause your insurer to raise your premiums.

  • You have a filing deadline. Most Texas homeowner policies require you to report storm damage within one year. After that window closes, the insurer can deny the claim outright.

Step 1: Document the Damage Immediately

Before you call anyone — photograph and video document everything. Gutters, downspouts, window screens, AC unit, roof edge from the ground. Time-stamped photos establish the pre-contractor condition and support the storm date on your claim.

Step 2: Get a Professional Inspection Before You Call Your Insurer

Get a written inspection from a qualified roofing contractor before you report to your insurer. That report documents shingle damage, flashing, ridge caps, gutters, and any water intrusion risk. Going into the claim with this documentation in hand changes your outcome.

Step 3: File the Claim

Call your insurance claims line. Have your policy number, storm date, and damage description ready. Request the adjuster's name and direct contact. Get a claim number and use it to track every communication.

Step 4: Understand Your Policy

  • RCV vs. ACV: Replacement Cost Value pays today's prices. Actual Cash Value pays minus depreciation — potentially thousands less on an older roof.

  • Your deductible: Texas policies often have a separate wind/hail deductible of 1–2% of dwelling value.

  • Matching provisions: Texas law supports matching requirements — if matching materials are unavailable, full replacement may be required.

Step 5: Be Present for the Adjuster Inspection

Walk the property with the adjuster. Reference your contractor's written inspection. Point out every documented item. Ask what they are and are not noting. Bring your contractor if possible.

Step 6: Review the Settlement and Push Back If Needed

Go through the Explanation of Benefits line by line with your contractor. If anything is missing or undervalued, request a supplemental review in writing with supporting documentation. Supplemental claims are common and accepted in DFW's active hail market.

Step 7: Choose Your Contractor Carefully

Select a contractor who is licensed and insured, pulls a permit, provides a written scope and warranty, and has direct experience with Texas insurance claims. Warning: if a contractor offers to waive your deductible, walk away. That is insurance fraud under Texas law.
