Hail Damage Roof Repair in DFW: What to Do in the First 48 Hours After a Storm

North Texas doesn't ease you into hail season. One afternoon the sky opens up, golf-ball-sized hail hammers your roof for 10 minutes, and then it's over. The damage is done — and what you do in the next 48 hours matters more than most homeowners realize.

Hour 1: Don't Go on the Roof

The instinct is understandable. But a wet roof after a hailstorm is dangerous, and walking on damaged shingles before an inspection can complicate your insurance claim. Stay off the roof. What you can do from the ground is already enough to get started.

Step 1: Check for Immediate Interior Damage

Walk through your home and look for water stains or active leaks on ceilings and in the attic. If you have active water intrusion, call a restoration contractor immediately for temporary protection — that stop-gap work is typically covered under your policy as an emergency measure.

Step 2: Document Everything Before Anyone Touches Anything

Photograph gutters, downspouts, window screens, your AC unit, and all exterior surfaces accessible safely from the ground. Hail leaves dents and dimpling on soft metals that document the storm's intensity. Time-stamped photos taken the day of the storm carry significant weight in a claim.

Step 3: Check NOAA for the Official Hail Report

Insurance companies track storm data. Pull the official weather record for your area — date, time, hail size — so you know what's on record before your adjuster does.

Step 4: Call a Trusted Local Contractor — Before You Call Your Insurance Company

Call a qualified roofing contractor for an independent inspection first. Once you file a claim, the insurer's adjuster controls the inspection timeline. Going in with your own written assessment puts you in a far stronger position. A good inspection documents granule loss, bruising, flashing damage, and impact marks across the full roof surface.

Step 5: File Your Claim Promptly

Most Texas homeowner policies require you to report hail damage within a specific window. Don't delay more than a day or two after your inspection. Call your insurer, report the damage, and get a claim number.

One critical note: by Texas law, your insurance rates cannot be raised as a result of a hail claim. It is classified as an act of God. There is no financial penalty for filing a legitimate claim. File it.
